1234-4321-1434-2434
Want to beef up your speed, strength and agility? Do this!
This slur exercise for classical guitarists builds strength and dexterity by combining “hammer-ons” and “pull-offs” in a pattern that utilizes the entire left hand.
The pattern is:
1234-4321-1434-2434
The right hand plays only on the first note of each of the four groups. The other notes are slurred by the left hand alone.
You may stay in one position on one string and repeat this exercise, or move from one string to the next, move on one string up the neck a fret at a time, or create a different pattern to keep things interesting and measure repetitions.

Hi, I’m Allen Mathews.
I started as a folk guitarist, then fell in love with classical guitar in my 20’s. Despite a lot of practice and schooling, I still couldn’t get my music to flow well. I struggled with excess tension. My music sounded forced. And my hands and body were often sore. I got frustrated, and couldn’t see the way forward. Then, over the next decade, I studied with two other stellar teachers – one focused on the technical movements, and one on the musical (he was a concert pianist). In time, I came to discover a new set of formulas and movements. These brought new life and vitality to my practice. Now I help guitarists find more comfort and flow in their music, so they play more beautifully.

Allen: Just wanted you to know I have thoroughly enjoyed The Woodshed program. I'm in Level 1C and love how every part works together. It has improved my "general" playing already.

I just upgraded. I have been thinking about it since day one, but wanted to see how it works out for me. I have to say, even though I did not put as much effort in as I expected to, I already hear and feel Improvements when playing compositions I learned some time ago, before joining The Woodshed.
Thanks!
